The stars in the heavens seem brighter now that Barbaro is galloping among them. It's a testament to his beauty and power that he could unite a nation in hope and mourning. Thanks to the Jacksons, Dr. Richardson, and all his caregivers for giving him the chance to beat the odds. He was truly magnificent...and he will continue to live on in all our hearts.

Union, KY
Barbaro, you took my breath away! Mr. and Mrs. Jackson and the Penn Team, your class is unmatched - what a wonderful gift to horses and racing to have you in our midst. My cynical heart has been renewed! Thank you! Kelley Jones

Fallston, MD.
My deepest condolence to the entire Barbaro family, owners, doctors, trainer and rider. It is a great loss to the world but his courage was his legacy. I am sure he has met Ruffian by now and neither one of them will be forgotten by me.

Skokie, Illinois
Gretchen Jackson said it best: Grief is the price we pay for love. Barbaro will always be in our hearts.

Florence, S.C.
As Michael Matz has said, THE moment was that top of the stretch Derby call: "And here comes Barbaro!" Our hearts soared, only to be broken, then inspired.

Lansing, MI
I have tears in my ears as I remember Barbaro. He was such an inspiration. I had prayed so hard for him to fully recover from his injuries. It broke my heart on Monday morning when I heard the news about his being put to sleep. Farewell Barbaro. You are no longer in pain but at peace.

Niles, MI
As a horse lover and after having about 6 in my lifetime, my heart is heavy and I wish him Gods speed. He is in Horse heaven with my mare and her first baby. He was so brave and so beautiful that my tears flow for this magnificent animal and all that helped him through this most difficult time. Farewell, Barbaro you are so loved. Kate

Moorpark, CA
We loved you Barbaro. Rest in peace. None of us will ever forget you.

Jackson, MI
I was so saddened to hear about Barbaro's end, though I understand why it had to be. I hope enough was learned from the treatment he received, that maybe others can be saved.

Alpena, Michigan
Barbaro, you are a true champ. We will miss you so much. Churchill Downs gained a lot of class because you won the derby there. Rest in peace my friend.

Albany, OR
I watched him break his leg it was horrid and I hoped for the best and preyed that he would end his life gracefully and not in pain I checked 3 times a day on blood horse and with the way it sounds dr. Richardson was a great vet I thank every one for being Barbaro’s heroes Emilee McCall

Ashland, KY
I will always remember Barbaro for how brave he was and the courage he showed us all to live.

Tavernier, Florida
Barbaro is the greatest horse ever and that’s all I have to say.

As I lie awake this morning before dawn, I thought to myself...it's a dream, he's not really gone. Alas, in the light of day, reality takes on a harsher tone and we realize that a great soul has departed this earth. There are so many eloquent and heartfelt condolences here...and what breaks my heart is how so very many people were touched by his spirit. As someone who is blessed enough to work with retired and rescued race horses, I know how very, very special they are. I am so proud of you, Barbaro. You were a true ambassador for God's unique and irreplaceable creature, the horse. Because of you, millions of people caught a glimpse into the noble heart of a Thoroughbred. You brought out the best of humanity and we are better for knowing you. Although the pain for those who mourn him is difficult to bear, we must believe that he has gone to a most wonderful place and there he runs, having slipped free of earthly bonds...toward the face of our Creator. Vaya Con Dios, dear one. We will never forget you.

Lexington, KY
Barbaro Was and will live on as a champion of champions. He was a true hero in every sense of the word and his owners had so much courage as did he during his battle with injury. Triumph he had, as did he have trials. But a loser he was not but a brave creature in the memories of every horse person and people who watch the Triple Crown. Prayers go to the trainer and the owners and the to the great doctor who made such big steps with Barbaro's healing process.

Braintree, MA
I watched as he won the Kentucky Derby in such a graceful and sensational manner. Two weeks later, I cried....I followed his progress on a regular basis - at one point, everything looked so positive for this beautiful animal. He tried so hard. I will always remember Barbaro. May he run through the skies with Secretariat, Ruffian and all of the horses that went before him.....

South Portland, Maine
To the Jacksons, Dr Richardson, and dedicated staff, you should be proud of everything you did for BARBARO. You did the best you could and gave BARBARO every chance possible. He was a lovely dear soul, I am sure he is in heaven running, eating carrots and apples, and is grateful for what you have done. He came to us at the right time and is a source of inspiration, courage, strength, and beauty to all of us. Peace

Rochester, NY
First thing every morning I went to my computer to check the Barbaro update. I read about a website where you could light a virtual candle for a reason special to you. The group Barba for Barbaro always had the most candles lit, never less than 4000. Several friends and relatives who are not horse people would ask how Barbaro was doing. It amazed and thrilled me that he had captured the hearts of and inspired so many. He was so courageous and honest and true. The spirit and heart of a true athlete, unlike so many human ones that are a disappointment. A fried called me the morning he died to give me the news. Tears rolled down my cheeks as a terrible sadness overcame me. I went to the light a candle website, and there were over 22,000 candles from 49 different countries and 48 of the US states lit for Barbaro. He is missed by so many.

Milwaukee, WI
My sympathy and sincere thanks to Dr. Richardson and the Jacksons for demonstrating the profound bond between humans and their horses. Barbaro and his connections have been an inspiration to all. We will remember the great charge in the home stretch of the Derby, but we will also remember the reports of Mrs. Jackson picking grass for him and Dr. Richardson's walks with him.

Plymouth Township, Ohio
Dear sweet Barbaro, my heart aches as I grieve your loss. The loss of a true champion and magnificent athlete. You had more courage, heart and class than a lot of humans I know. Rest in peace and be free to run in heaven with all the other great horses. To the Jacksons, Dr. Richardson, and all the staff at New Bolton who cared so well for him, Edgar Prado, Peter Brette, Michael Matz, and everyone else close to him, my heart aches for you all. Thank you all for trying your best. I hoped and prayed for him every day. I know from many experiences that the decision you had to make is one of the most gut wrenching ones. You did the right thing though; no one wanted to see him in pain and suffering. I will always love and miss you sweet, gallant boy. I have some beautiful color photos I received at Christmas to look at and remember you always! Karen Knotts

Ocala, FL
My heart goes out to the Jacksons, Dr, Richardson and the staff at New Bolton Center. Barbaro was given the best care available, and I know all their hearts are hurting now. Barbaro has crossed the Rainbow Bridge, heading to green pastures, where there is no pain and much comfort.

Norcross, Georgia
As I've read the BEAUTIFUL heart wrenching tributes on this "Memoriam to Barbaro," I say Amen and Amen! It was once written, "It is better to have loved and lost, then to have never loved at all." To those of us who's hearts were captured by Beautiful Barbaro, we're able to truly echo this sentiment. He was simply the BEST!! Tears are a language God understands (and I'm crying as I write this) and He has heard a lot from us the past 2 days. My heart goes out to Gretchen & Roy Jackson, what compassionate, loving people, Dear Dr. Dean Richardson & his Wonderful staff!, the Trainers, Edger, et al. Barbaro touched our lives off the track in ways we never thought possible. He became our Hero, as did those who knew him personally. Barbaro will always be remembered for his brave heart and strong spirit in the face grave adversity. He gave it his all and blessed our hearts. Thank you for sharing Barbaro with us. Debora

Lancaster, SC
Barbaro, I hope we can all accept the offering you made of courage, love and strength and reciprocate this to all our horses. You have been an ambassador for the equine world of unparalleled elegance and grace. As someone said upon seeing you, "He is an old soul, he has been here before." I believe this is true and I know that someday you will return. My only wish is that you would've stayed a little longer. With a broken heart. OML

Powhatan, VA
I watched the Derby at the Lexington VA Horse Center, during a hunter-jumper show. The people there knew Michael Matz, and the cheering and excitement was incredible! Something no one who was there will ever forget. Thank you for trying so hard to save this great horse.

Plantation, Florida
You were a Champion on Earth and now you will be a Champion in Heaven. God Bless You

Houston, Texas
To all of you......I know you have heard it many times.....and I have checked the "UPDATES" every single day and printed them, since that awful accident. I was watching.....and just like most, cried. Still cry. Somehow, Barbaro gave all of us hope, fortitude, courage and strength. Somehow, we all felt if he could make it, then whatever hardship befell us, we could struggle through it, and win. I've owned a horse...which made it more personal. Now, I'm stronger because of this magnificent creature’s strength and courage. I still cry as do many. And I know you do too. God bless you.....watch for those pennies left on the ground, or wherever. They are a message from your wonderful horse.....he's with you.....watching over your from a special place. With warmth and love, Victoria Sheridan

Maywood, IL
You Touched a Nation With Your Courage, Beauty, and Determination You Truly Will Be Missed.

Parkman, ME
Once, or twice in a lifetime, a horse will come through who really WAS special. Barbaro was one of them. My other all time favorite who didn't get the recognition in his lifetime was Spectacular Bid. And to make matters worse, HE just faded away into oblivion after he proved to be mediocre in the breeding shed. In death, Spectacular Bid should have been immortalized as I'm sure Barbaro will be. Back to Barbaro, he, like Bid had a soul, quite frankly the soul of a lion. Competitors with heart, game and incredible ability, coupled with the best of training. God Bless Michael Matz and the Jackson's and Barbaro's vet and all the other people who so valiantly fought along with this horse to give him every possible chance of making the rest of his life a possibility. We have learned a lot from this 8 month gripper. There were lessons to be gleaned from this scenario, lessons for us all. God sent this horse to teach us.

West Berlin, New Jersey
I just wanted to say that I will miss Barbaro very much. I knew from the first moment I read about him in the paper that he was going to shine. I believe Barbaro was put here as very special purpose, and that was to help doctors find a better understanding for this awful disease. I also want to say that I am also happy that Barbaro isn’t suffering anymore.

South Haven, MN
What a race that will be Barbaro, Ruffian, Go for Wand, Secretariat, Seattle Slew, Alydar, Affirmed, the Bid and so many more. Rest in peace along with my Duchess.

Cocoa Beach, FL
I was at Churchill Downs with my mom (a 60th birthday gift to her) when Barbaro won the Kentucky Derby. We cherished his win in our hearts and were devastated when he broke his leg in the Preakness. We had prayed and prayed for his recovery and our hearts are now broken. We will always treasure the memory of Barbaro on that special Derby day and his gallant fight to survive his injuries against significant odds. Our prayers now go out to his owners and caretakers, and to others grieving like my mom and me. Barbaro truly had and still has the heart of a champion. I hope he is running and running in heaven...

Amarillo, Texas
Barbaro was a true testament to that something extra a great Thoroughbred gives to life -- his own life, and that of those who are lucky enough to know them. Thanks for your inspiration and for the unity you brought to the equine community and beyond.

Louisville, KY
I will never forget the day after the Preakness; we had all sat down to dinner as a family. The dinner was interrupted about every five minutes when we would hear an update of Barbaro and we would all immediately bolt to the nearest television in the house. This magnificent, beautiful animal served as a powerful metaphor of the uncertainty in life. He united an entire nation around him and he will ALWAYS be America's champion. -Kevin Quick

Cedar Lake, IN
He was a great inspiration to everyone who loves racing and the power of the horses that run them. He'll be greatly missed and loved for many years to come.

Sylvester, GA
To all of Barbaro's Champions: Thanks for all the love compassion and care that you provided Barbaro, and for giving him the chance to live. You have raised the bar! Barbaro: Your spirit and courage carried you farther than anyone dared to hope. You have captured all of our hearts. We will miss you and you will never be forgotten.

Who knows what he could have been....a Triple Crown Winner? A sire of Champions? Survival would have been a fairy tale....and wouldn't we all like to have believed? But we are not left empty.....Barbaro demonstrated the heart & spirit of a champion.....and what a wonderful personality. If it's this hard for us who never met him personally.....what must it be like for Dr. Richardson and the Jacksons? Be Brave, Be Thankful.....and Let's Remember That Wonderful Derby Romp! Run Barbaro, Run.....there are now no bounds.

Wichita, Kansas
My deepest sympathies go to the Jackson family on the loss of a magnificent animal. He fought the good fight and gave his all but it was not to be. We never had the privilege of knowing him but feel that he was the epitome of what "having heart" meant. God knew that he would be suffering too much to let him go on. Please know that even though it has torn your heart out to have to put him down he will live in the nation's heart forever. May god bless the Jackson family and all of New Bolton Center's doctors. Know that he is not in pain any longer.

Kyle, Texas
We love you Barbaro, we will never forget you. Alexandra Hollinshead

Barbaro, He is and will forever be a GIFT FROM GOD to remind us that LOVE conquers all. Such beauty, grace and a spirit that will forever be with all whom he touched. Words cannot express the grief we feel, but we are so very happy that we got to know you. You are now free to run and play with Secretariat and all his friends. I pray I will see you again up there in heaven. Until then my friend enjoy!!

Dear sweet Barbaro you fought to the bitter end. You truly are a champion. You will forever be missed and loved. My deepest sympathy goes out to the Jacksons, the doctors and staff that cared for you. Rest in peace my friend.

Belchertown, Massachusetts
Barbaro carried the hopes and dreams of those of us who still mourn Ruffian, Pine Island, Go for Wand and all the other gallant racehorses that die providing us with the thrill of watching them do what they were bred to do. His death was like reliving their deaths, and perhaps even harder, because we had the hope that he would live and defy the odds. He will truly be mourned by horse racing fans and those who watch only the Kentucky Derby. He was breathtaking, and loved to run. Hopefully his death will help galvanize racing into making it a safer sport for the equine athlete.

Weston, Fl
To Gretchen and Roy, Dr. Richardson, Michael Matz, Edgar Prado and all of those who cared for him and loved him for what he was, thanks for allowing us to have Barbaro as part of our lives and as an inspiration. Bye Baby Boy, we will miss you and remember with gratitude all you stood for. God is waiting for you, run free in the infinite pastures of Heaven!

Kitchener, ON Canada
I haven't been this touched by a Thoroughbred since Alysheba and Ferdinand. The world was a better place with him in it and hopefully, his legacy keeps it that way. I am still heartbroken at the news, but know it was for the best. He will always be remembered by his fans - off and on the racetrack. Also, my deepest condolences to the Jacksons, Dr. Richardson, Mr. Matz, and Mr. Brette as well as everyone who shared in the Barbaro story.

Mansfield, TX
Rest well, champ.

Prospect, KY
I watched him cross the finish line on my birthday and knew we had a champion. He had not done anything wrong and that was how it was till the end. He was a champion on the track and he was a champ fighting for his life. A true champion is loved by all, and he was. His owners and the veterinary staff that loved and cared for him for so long deserve our prayers and best wishes. Keep up the good work and know you did what was right through out! Barbaro, thanks for all the great memories! R

I've had to make the decision myself with several loved horses, just two years ago with my 27-year-old schoolmaster. But it never gets easier. Thank you, Jacksons and New Bolton, for fighting for the horse so hard and also for, when it was time, making the right choice to let him go. Barbaro, regardless of what the Eclipse voters said, you will always be to me the 3-year-old champion and the Horse of the Year for 2006.

De Soto, KS
Just too sad for words. What wonderful, loving and responsible people the Jacksons are. Barbaro was an amazing horse no matter what opponent he faced. What heartache for all.

Pismo Beach, CA
Barbaro, you were a true champion. You will be greatly missed. My thoughts and prayers go out to your family and friends.

Barbaro, a champion in every way, on the track and in his courage while fighting to survive!! He was surrounded by the best owners, vets and trainers; he deserved nothing but the best. Please give my sympathy to Mr. and Mrs. Jackson, they are champions too!!

Goodbye, my friend until we meet again

Las Vegas, NV
I don't know what it was, but Barbaro captured my heart at the Kentucky Derby and it grew bigger and bigger with love for him as the ups and downs of his healing and suffering went along. It was if he was my very own horse, that's how deep the love was I had for him. My heart broke and tore apart yesterday morning...it's that way for me with animals. How I loved Barbaro and always will.

Lewis Center, OH
Thanks so much to the Jacksons and to Dr. Richardson for fighting as hard as they could to save the life of this beautiful colt, and also for knowing when it was time to let go. When I heard the news Monday, I pictured him galloping off at last, with full use of his magnificent body. No more pain to face, free to challenge the wind again. Heartbreak, but still, having followed racing since 1955, I'm very grateful to have seen this magnificent animal race, even for so short a season.

Baltimore, Md.
MY Deepest Sympathy to everyone who were the closest to Barbaro!!! Barbaro made the whole world well aware of Thoroughbred racing, and we thank him for that!

Lynn, Massachusetts
You were a beautiful and courageous horse. May you rest in peace, and be roaming & racing with Secretariat in your new life. God Bless You

Eagle, WI
Barbaro was a hero when one was needed. He did it effortlessly. I shall miss him terribly. I checked on him daily, and felt I have lost a friend. A friend, a hero. One I admired. I send loving thoughts for healing hearts to all who were involved with Barbaro, from his owners, his doctors, caretakers and those in racing and those not. I know all loved him, and miss him. He is better now. We must believe that, and want that for him. And he shall live forever, as he will be remembered forever, and in that- he shall live forever. I love and miss you Hero.

Murphysboro, IL
Barbaro, your candle was extinguished long before it should have...there are no words to describe the totality of a spirit gone to us. The determination...the silent fine drive to win the battle, whether on the track or in life, has and will always be a beautiful factor known to few people...but to most horses. Those who truly appreciate the specialness of a horse and all they give will be a better person. Thank you, Barbaro, for entering that realm and making us all who will miss you a little better for knowing of you.

Lakeville, Massachusetts
Barbaro, you have touched my life as you have so many others. Thank you to the Jackson's for sharing your amazing colt with us. I will miss the daily updates on your recovery. Wishing you grassy fields. May God hold you in the palm of his hand. Marybeth

Los Angeles, CA
You captured the hearts of nation with your victory at the Derby. You made us fall in love at the Preakness. You took the lead in the toughest race you have ever run. You came flying down the backstretch with a lead only to be overtaken by our lord who you followed to the winners circle. RIP Barbaro, have fun racing with him and all the other greats before you. You will always be remembered. Thanks for the memories.

Marshfield, Massachusetts
As a lifelong horse person, its interesting hearing people wonder why the death of Barbaro is such a big deal... How could these people know? Know what it's like to have such a magnificent creature be part of your life. To earn the trust and affection of animal that could, if he chose, severely injure or even kill you... To raise them, bring them along slowly, carefully so they can reach their potential. And Barbaro's potential was limitless. But I know. I know the Jackson pain; I have a lump in my throat as I write this email. My love for these remarkable creatures is in my DNA...I come from a long line of horse people...From my great grandmother in Ireland to myself. I grieve with the Jackson's for their tremendous loss. Because I know.

Barbaro was adopted by the world. We have all held our breath, rejoiced or cringed whenever the news changed about our beloved Barbaro. It is so hard to believe that this awesome, special horse united so many people in hope and prayer for his recovery. Now we are united in our grief over the loss of this awesome special horse. At work today total strangers cried together over his passing. Barbaro, you will be missed deeply by those of us you have left behind. Fly up to the heavens, dear sweet boy, and join the Great Ones. Love, Linn

Torrance, CA
God bless his big, beautiful heart.

Skull Valley, AZ
When I lost my Thoroughbred Worthy Company in October of 2006 I used these words I had seen once to describe how I felt...Some horses come into our lives and quickly go. Others stay a while, make hoof prints on our hearts and we are never, never the same. Barbaro was the kind that left hoof prints on all our hearts. I like to think Barbaro will have a gallop with Worthy.

Silver Spring, MD
I just want to express my condolences to all of Barbaro's connections (owners, groom, jockey, vet, et al) on the loss of this incredible horse. I have kept Barbaro in my prayers all these months and I pray now that the Lord will give you strength, courage and faith. M/M Jackson, may you have many more champions! Dawn

BARBARO, an amazing animal with such a large heart. Amazing, also, was the way he touched us all. I am so sorry he lost his battle. My heart goes out to all who fought for him and loved him. He will not be forgotten!

Smithfield, RI I loved this horse before winning the Derby. Everyday I monitored his progress and was really concerned when he started to fail on the weekend. I cried for hours on Monday but getting comfortable that it was time to say goodbye to this great Hero. Barbaro would not be happy with having to be hand walked and lame for the rest of his live. He loved to fly like the wind and his courage and sprit will live on.

Boston, Massachusetts
I will miss him he was a strong willed horse will miss you!

Warner Robins, GA
It all happened so suddenly, the decision to "put down" Barbaro, that it angered me at first. I truly believe that he should have been given more time, simply because "setbacks" occur in most situations before progress can resume (the old "two steps forward, one backward"). The notion that he shouldn't have any pain or discomfort is unrealistic. Had Barbaro had the choice, I believe he would have chosen to live and keep fighting.

Fort Lauderdale, Fl.
It is with regret that I learned of the passing of Barbaro. This handsome horse possessed all the qualities of a true champion; we were denied the opportunity to see just how good he was on the track. However, we can make no mistake on the tremendous courage he exhibited after his injury and fight to survive. He deserved a better outcome. So too, did his wonderful owners, who put his well-being above all other considerations. From the initial injury on the track with the decision to try to save him to the ultimate decision to spare him further suffering. Mr. & Mrs. Jackson your wonderful champion will be remembered for his talent, bravery and class and his name will always be linked to yours. Remember, Barbaro is having fun now with Go for Wand and Ruffian - it's about time they had someone fast enough to run with.

Saratoga Springs, NY
Thank you to Dr. Richardson and staff for all your efforts on trying to save a truly magnificent horse. When if came down to the end he lost his biggest race. He will always be in my heart. We love and you will always be remembered.

Lake Grove, NY
I first saw Barbaro in the local paper when I was in the hospital last summer. He was standing on the track next to his jockey, at The Preakness with his right hind leg up. His expression was one of pain and disappointment. I never saw a horse with that kind of facial expression. I knew I would always love him and his spirit. He is a true champion. The Derby was his! Love, A True Forever "In My Heart" Fan Denise Selensky. Love you Barbaro!!! Sweet, Sweet Treasure!! Hope to see you in Heaven with Secretariat, Ruffian and all the best!

Lexington, KY
We can land on the moon but we can't save a life we love. Rest in peace Barbaro and every great champions Ruffian, Go for Wand, Pine Island and Horatio Nelson.

My heartfelt sympathies go out to all connected with Barbaro. I can hardly see for the tears. I will miss you so much Baby Boy. I Love You. Always in my heart. Special thanks to DR. R

Lanse, PA
I felt such a connection to a horse I never met. I knew when I first saw Barbaro on the cover of Blood Horse he would win the Derby. I never felt such a certainty again until a few weeks ago when he had the problem in the left hoof again. This time I knew he would have to be put down soon. Not since Secretariat has a horse captured our hearts like this one did. What courage he had! He brought to the forefront that people do care for these magnificent animals more than just to win a $2.00 bet. Racing is so much more. There must have been a reason that this happened, perhaps it was to show us all that there are still good people in the world that are compassionate enough to do every thing possible to save a horse. And to show us that these horses are individuals with personalities. We'll miss you Barbaro. May you enjoy romping in that big green pasture with those who have gone before you.

Arlington, Texas
We will miss you so much Barbaro. I wish things would have worked out better for you.

Thank you to Roy and Gretchen for giving him a chance and a BIG thank you to Dr. Richardson for all you did for him. Your hard work and compassion will never be forgotten. With deep sorrow Goodbye Champ!

Palm Beach Gardens, FL
Your legacy will sort itself out in time, what history remembers you for has yet to be seen in all its far-reaching ramifications. But you have left racing with an indelible stamp, forever. Everyone connected to you did their utmost best to do right by you, and they did, right to the end. You had to know you were in the safest hands all along. Now, I hope we all continue to do right by you. You owe us nothing, but we owe you everything. Every moment of your life had meaning, it is up to us to make sure that continues, all of us who love horses, and love this sport. For a brief moment in time, you gave us a permanent reminder of what we mere mortals owe to their horses we ask SO much of. Your true triumph was not your races, and not even your incredible battles these last months, though we shall never forget either. You left all of us with a heady challenge, loud and clear. We heard you Barbaro, we hear you still. May each of us have half your courage and conviction, so that together, it makes a difference? Run, Barbaro, and we will follow your lead.

Ballston Spa, NY
Having gone through the horrible experience of losing a race horse myself, I send my thoughts and prayers to all those around Barbaro. After the loss of our own beloved Kohut, I thought that things couldn't be a worse and I wondered if I was cut out for this business that is the Thoroughbred Race Industry. Loss may be part of the game but, that doesn’t make it any easier. I know that horses come and go and somehow, I've found the strength to move on. I realized that horses such a Barbaro and Kohut, are angels, sent here for whatever purpose. And the little time we get to spend with them is a time we will cherish forever. To Barbaro: Know that you are a champion among champions and always will be. You will be missed by all those that you brought so much hope to. When you arrive at that big pasture in the sky, run and be free. And if you get lonely, there are a million buddies to choose from. Also, if you could, tell Kohut we love him - because like you, he is gone but he will never be forgotten. Heather Gregorek

Oh, what might have been.

Los Angeles, CA
God Bless you beautiful boy. Your story and courage helped me through a very hard part of my life. I prayed for you, followed every aspect of your recovery and am now in mourning as you leave for heaven. I will look at my stunning portrait of you hanging in my home and thank God for making a creature like you. An athlete with no agenda or ego. You would have been a champion of which we have not seen in decades. I will pet your beautiful face in heaven. God Bless the Jacksons, the Matzs, Edgar Prado and all the wonderful people at New Bolton. And a special one for Dr. Richardson.

Henderson, Kentucky
What a true champion. I know he is now with other great Thoroughbreds, Man O'War, Citation, Secretariat, Ruffian, Go for Wand. I like to think that they are all in a starting gate and doing what they loved to do -- race. I wonder if they let each other win. Barbaro, you will always be remembered. He was champion on and off the track. One has to wonder what a great a career he would have had.

Spruce Grove, AB
Noble Barbaro. May your legacy be that much will have been learned in order that others may survive and flourish. My sincere condolences to Roy and Gretchen Jackson, Michael Matz, Dr. Richardson, Edgar Prado, and all who loved and cared for Barbaro throughout his stay at New Bolton. Rest now noble champion. Godspeed your way home.

Los Angeles, California
Like so many, I'm in tears writing this memorial. It seems strange when there's so much death that goes on now of human beings that we'd have such a reaction to an animal. But like many have said, he was the symbol of innocence, unconditional love and spirit that is what life is all about. We can learn a lot from all the "beings" put on earth that are not called human beings, but are more like we all should be. My heart goes out to the fabulous owners and Doctor who are now grieving the loss of a beautiful life.

Crookston, MN
When we pause to look back on such an event, we realize that the full magnitude of what Barbaro did for Thoroughbred racing went well beyond winning every race of his career, excluding the Preakness. His courage, his heart, his untamable spirit and will to live brought the racing world together, and bound us together in the hopes that this magnificent animal would one day recover. Although that dream is no more, what Barbaro lived through us can survive. We salute the brave connections of Barbaro, and thank them for everything they have done. Now it is our turn to give something for this horse. Let us not forget what Barbaro symbolized to all of us. Let us live on with the memory of what Barbaro did for us, and strive to do the same for others. Thanks for the ride Barbaro...you will not be forgotten.

Pleasant Hill, IL
My thoughts and prayers are with everyone who knew and loved Barbaro. What a great loss...my heart is really heavy right now.

Jefferson, WI
Barbaro: We all love you. I know you are in heaven now running free and strong as you did in the Kentucky Derby. My dairy prayer was that you would survive to lead a happy life on the farm of your owners, Roy and Gretchen Jackson. You would have been our Triple Crown winner. You are the 3-year-old champion. Your spirit and your inspiration live on. I firmly believe you would have been another Secretariat, who, incidentally, also succumbed to the dread disease laminitis. I just don't understand why you were taken from us. Or why you had that horrendous misstep in the first place. You wanted to win and to live so badly.

Jamestown, TN
I will always cherish my cell phone video of you leaving the starting gate and coming around the far turn to win the Derby. Sonja Conatser

Kenosha, WI
What is there to say? I'm broken hearted.

Lexington, Kentucky
I urge the Jackson's to consider the Kentucky Horse Park for Barbaro's final resting place--similar to the grave/statue of Man o' War. It seems to be a fitting resting place for "America's horse" and would allow future generations to appreciate and remember such a valiant horse.

Louisville, KY
I am deeply saddened to learn of Barbaro's death. He was the first true Super Horse of my generation and an inspiration during difficult times. I've waited almost 30 years for a Triple Crown winner and then, at the KY Derby, down the stretch he came, with ease, to serve note that our new champion had arrived. Barbaro was and will always be the chosen one, never to be forgotten. Rest in peace my friend, you will be missed.

St. Louis, MO
Good bye sweet champion. My heart is heavy. You will be remembered for your courage and the determination with which you fought until the very end. I will remember the triumphs. You taught us all about life and will never be forgotten. Thank you to the Jacksons and Dr. Richardson and the staff at New Bolton. My heart and thoughts go out to all of you. Barbaro was a special horse.

Santa Clara, CA
First came tears of joy for all of his achievements on the track. Next came tears of hope along with prayers for his recuperation and yesterday came tears of complete sorrow and sadness for this beautiful and gallant colt named Barbaro. So many tears shed by so many people of different ages, backgrounds and places and yet I am sure that in each and every heart was a special place for Barbaro who fought so hard to try and please everyone. My own special thanks to the owners, doctors, jockey and all who did their utmost best to save this young horse and yet it must have been God's will to take Barbaro to a place where he is now free of pain and can rest.

Brick, NJ
My thoughts and prayers go out to the Jackson's, Dr Richardson and everyone else who loved and cared for him. He will be missed very much, but he will never be forgotten. Mrs. De Fazio

Milwaukee, WI
My tears flowed when I heard of your passing and my memory flowed back to the passing of another gallant horse who suffered a similar fate years ago, the filly Ruffian. I know that she greeted you at Rainbow Bridge and the two of you are running like the wind together there, free of pain. My heart goes out to your companion humans and all who cared for you. Run free and strong...Kate

I was heartbroken yesterday when I came home and heard that you had passed on. I admired your will to get better, and loved watching you run. Rest in peace, Barbaro.

My deepest sympathy to all who cared for Barbaro his entire life. From those that saw his first breath and attempt to stand on his long spindly legs, to those that conditioned and finely tuned this true champion athlete, to those whose dedicated profession provided care and comfort when he needed it most, may God Bless you all. Thank you, Barbaro, for the wonderful memories. The world was a brighter place with you in it. Jodie

Norristown, PA
I have lost two horses in the past two years, one only three short months ago yesterday. My beloved pony broke a bone and eventually developed laminitis... a sadly familiar story I relived every time I checked on Barbaro's progress. I can still remember the pain of finally realizing it was time to let go. My other horse, a Thoroughbred who reminds me very much of Barbaro, especially in personality and his desire to live, developed hepatitis this past summer, and in October, his fight ended too. Two of the greatest horses in my life passed on, and now I feel as if I had lost a third. Barbaro’s plight showed the world what many horses and owners suffer through silently, and I hope that all horses that have lost their fight for life will be remembered and honored with Barbaro. And I pray that the research will continue to save the lives of all the heroes who bless our lives. Rest in peace, Barbaro, I hope all my horsy friends are happy in their freedom together.

Duncannon, PA
I have no words to express the hurt I feel about the passing of Barbaro. I have followed this story from beginning to end, and even visiting the New Bolton Center. I commend Dr. R., The Jacksons, and NBC staff for the job they did with Barbaro. There is no greater love than this!

Loveland, Colorado
Barbaro you stole my heart and the worlds heart as well, you gave the world something to be proud of in an uncertain time, your owners the Jacksons and the vets that helped you are people with great courage. May you roam in fly free pastures with your friends. Love Mary

Michigan City, Indiana
Barbaro, your legacy will be in helping horses that will come after you that can be helped and cured by everything you went through. We and they will be forever grateful for what you endured. I will see you running again someday. Now rest in peace. Mandy & Family

Will there be a funeral or public memorial? I'm so shocked; I really thought Barbaro was going to make it!

Harrisburg, PA
To the Jacksons, Dr. Richardson and all who helped in Beautiful Barbaro's care. I can't even imagine what you are going through right now. I prayed constantly for him to be able to just live life like a horse again but I guess it wasn't to be. Barbaro was loved by so many people and that will continue forever. I pray that you find peace in knowing that you did everything you could for a beautiful creature from God.

Lexington, Kentucky
Mr. and Mrs. Jackson, I hope you will consider burying your precious Barbaro here at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington. It is a venue befitting a legendary horse who continues to touch even more lives outside of the racing industry than within it. At the Horse Park millions of visitors each year will get to visit with your boy. I believe it's an even grander location than a fabled race track museum grounds. People come from all over to visit the horse park for the sheer love of the magnificent animal. My wife and I live on a small farm in Jessamine County, Kentucky where Barbaro was foaled. I drove past his birthplace today. We would love to have him return here to the bluegrass, for posterity. We will always treat him with the utmost respect. We send you our sympathy and heart-felt appreciation for the efforts you made.

Ann Arbor, MI
To borrow from another classy horse taken too soon: Here lies the fleetest runner the American Turf has ever known, and one of the gamest and most generous of horses. Thank you to the Jacksons, and everyone, for showing us all how to continue, and how to stop.

Groves, Texas
I am so saddened that our dear Barbaro had to be put down. He "RAN A GOOD RACE!" Now he knows no pain. We will all miss him and my thoughts and prayers go out to his owners, trainers, jockey, medical staff and all his caregivers. We love you Barbaro!!

Portland, OR
I will always remember Barbaro's courage and intelligence during this time. Not a day went by that I did not check on how he was doing and marvel at his spirit. He was "our" champion. The team that fought to save him deserves every bit of praise they have received. I often think of him as he was, coming down the stretch at the Derby, every inch a winner. He had a huge heart. We will miss you a lot, big guy.

Lynn Holbrook
Dear Mr. & Mrs. Jackson, There are no words to explain how I feel. Thank you BARBARO for the Kentucky Derby. When I heard the news, I balled like a baby. You were America's Horse! And always will be. I want to thank the Jackson's and Dr. Richardson and his assistants for their dedication. You sure gave everyone a great run; highs and lows. I think horse and animals lovers were glued to your sites; etc. Any little word we hung on. I know you are at The Rainbow Bridge with other horses that went on before you. My Space has been dedicated to you for months. And I am going to leave it. I will always remember you and you will always be in my heart. God Bless You and the Jackson's. Thank you so much. Lynn Holbrook

Bellefontaine, Oh
Barbaro, you were a beautiful animal may you rest in eternal peace and know that you were loved by millions. And to the team that tried to save you God bless you all.

So sad to hear about Barbaro. He'll be missed.

Syracuse, Indiana
I am just thankful that I was at Churchill when Barbaro won the Derby. He was truly a great athlete and will always be honored as such. He will be greatly missed by his fans and by this greatest of sports.

Vinton, LA
Barbaro could've been any kind on the racetrack, even more special than he already was, but we'll never know. One thing is for certain, he will never be forgotten. His valiant effort to cooperate with his caregivers at New Bolton showed intelligence and attributes not all horses possess. Our sympathies to the Jacksons, Dr. Dean, and the rest of those who gave their all to give this horse a second chance at life

Madison, Indiana
I asked for a sign yesterday as I thought about him, I looked up to the sky and a cloud passed in the shape of a fully extended horse with rider. I am at peace as I know he is at peace. Everyone can learn from this experience even those who believe that there are no more heroes. A horse can do this to a nation, just remember Seabiscuit, and just remember "BIG RED" and now we can honor Barbaro. Thank you my gallant friend. Your courage is an inspiration. Everyone needs something to believe in and now we have that once again.

Independence, KY
To my dearest Barbaro, I watched your trainer as a young man in the Olympic Games, and I watched you as a two year old. I have been a horseracing fan for a lot of years I even own an ex-racehorse. I have watched many a Derby, Preakness and Belmont even the Breeders' Cup. But nothing was better in all of those years and all of those races than watching you at this year's Kentucky Derby. You were something that made us all love the sport. You are a Champion and always will be. I love you Barbaro!

Louisville, KY
I was so excited last year to have the KY Derby winner . . . yes, I bet on Barbaro! Several weeks later, I left Louisville for a weekend trip to Berea KY, but made sure I stopped at Keeneland to place a bet on Barbaro for the Preakness. Later in the afternoon while relaxing at my hotel while watching the Preakness coverage, I was shocked and sickened when Barbaro sustained his horrible leg injury. Later, at dinner, I was still upset over the event and prayed Barbaro would be alright. I have read, watched, and listened for months now hoping for the best. Again, I was shocked and sickened yesterday when I heard the news. I have lived in Louisville KY all my adult life (I am 58 years old) and have seen many Derby winners, but none with the courage and strength Barbaro exhibited. Rest in peace, Barbaro.  . . you were one of a kind.

Santa Rosa, CA
Now that your battle is over, rest easy sweet horse. There is a grand old gentleman named Rum Car waiting at the gate to show you the ropes.

Westport, CT
He was a true CHAMPION, and a lesson to us all! Thanks to all who tried their best to help him. Sometime prayers aren't enough. God Bless, you beautiful horse!

Barbaro represented all that is good in horse racing. Most notably, the ability to captivate a nation through great feats. The loss of Barbaro is the loss of a legend.

Rockingham, NC
I kept a daily watch on the internet to check on Barbaro since his accident. I was hoping that he would recover to eventually go to a farm in Kentucky. I was so devastated when he suffered setbacks over the weekend. The vet school, vet, trainer, jockey, owners, and all who contributed to his care were wonderful. Barbaro has been an inspiration for all. Deborah Thomas

Lexington, Ky.
Thank you Barbaro.....for giving us all hope, just simply by being an inspiration for all humans and animals and fighting the fight until the end. Thank you Mr. & Mrs. Jackson for loving Barbaro enough to exhaust all efforts and caring for him enough be with him at the very end. Thank you Dr. Richardson and staff for trying and going that extra mile...what you did for Barbaro...will aid in helping all horses in the future. Barbaro....be at peace now....and may you run your little heart out up in heaven.

We are Thoroughbred owners ourselves and our hats are off to the Jacksons for sticking by their friend till the very end. We understand your pain you feel it will be with you for several days and weeks. We too lost friends and we still think about them after many years. In our minds they are all champions. They give you so much love...god bless. You are the owners of the industry.

My deepest sympathy to Roy and Gretchen Jackson, Dr. Richardson, New Bolton staff, Michael Matz, Edgar Prado and a host of caring people who were a part of this great horse's life. May God in His infinite wisdom grant you peace and comfort. Often I would pray for Barbaro and checked the updates weekly at the Center. I knew it would be a day to day journey. Although my heart is very heavy, I feel a sense of relief for Barbaro. He's free now. No pain, no discomfort. God decided it was time he comes home. We'll never forget you, Big Barbaro! You inspired hope and showed all of us what true grit and courage really is.

Marion, Oh
A tearful goodbye sweet Barbaro. I know you are now at the Rainbow Bridge, happy, healthy and running free. God Bless You Barbaro

Being a Horseman. It breaks my heart to have followed this story from Beginning to The End. What a wonderful and classy horse he was. And for our entire Nation to be living thru him has truly touched each of us. May there be a memorial to keep a part of him with us. “May you rest in peace now, Bobby”. Godspeed.

Westmount, Québec, Canada

Gahanna, OH
I can't believe you're gone. I followed your story on BloodHorse month after month after month. Your courage, spirit, and determination will never be forgotten. You were truly a Thoroughbred in body and soul. God bless the Jacksons and everyone involved in your care. Their love for you is undeniable. We who love all animals will see you at the Rainbow Bridge.

Jonesboro, Arkansas
Barbaro you were indeed a good looking horse. It seems you nearly communicated with your caretakers also. What a special horse.

Salmon, Idaho
I am a retired horseman, and trainer, and I was really pulling hard for him. He was a wonderful colt, and I loved him.

Los Angeles
I hit that trifecta that one May afternoon in the Kentucky derby. For a 28 year old kid like me that's Life changing money (I started my own business). After seeing him struggle at the end, I knew the end was near. All I got to say is thank You Barbaro, there won't ever be another like you. Rest in Peace Buddy.

Louisville, KY
The Jacksons and Dr. Richardson and his staff have shown the entire racing community that the love of the animal is greater than the love of the fortune from it. There should be no doubt that Barbaro is now galloping again among the sprits and legends and those of his own ancestors that have preceded him in death. His legacy will forever be his will...

Chicago, IL
Magnificent Barbaro; I wish you thru eternity endless green pastures and open fields in which to run, your mane flying in the wind and sunshine to always warm your glorious face. Barbaro will live forever on as inspiration in my heart, thank you Barbaro, Godspeed

Rochester Hills, MI
My first glimpse of Barbaro was in the paddock prior to the Kentucky Derby. He was a handful, so full of himself and simply awesome looking. What touched me most through his whole ordeal was hearing that he would go up to the sling as if asking to be put back in when he needed a little relief. To me, that not only shows his intelligence but for a flight animal like the horse, what a brave leap of faith to put his trust so completely in others. There will be another Derby winner this year, but there will never be another Barbaro. I hope he has found the peace he so richly deserves. And as for his human care team, his trust in you was rewarded a million times over. Thank you for your unwavering devotion to him. His life may have been too short, but it was filled with all that matters.

New Meadows, ID
What an example of the courage of the Thoroughbred horse, and the courage of his owners. His attitude and heart towards his healing was remarkable. This must have been a difficult decision for all. A decision with the good of the horse at its core. Farewell Barbaro

Ocoee, FL
What a beautiful animal, you gave the industry the means to help other horses. May Barbaro be frolicking in heaven, eating to his hearts content, and truly whole.

Clever, MO
My heart is in pieces today for the loss of a great horse. We will all wonder what could have been, sad because of the babies he could have sired with that great zest for life and most what a true fighter he was. My prayers are with all that knew him best and always put him first. Barbaro you showed us the true meaning of courage and hope. You will always have a special place in my heart.

Delmont, PA
What a fantastic horse. A beautiful sight to watch running with the wind. I had my eye on Barbaro long before he was victorious in the Kentucky Derby. He ran with an attitude that he was going to show us what he was all about. He did that in so many ways all I can say is "Awesome". He is a fighter, a warrior, a winner, a champion, and the best horse that every touched foot on a racetrack.

Woolwich Twp, NJ
My condolences go out to the Jacksons, Dr. Richardson, Michael Matz, Edgar Prado, and all who were involved with Barbaro. He is a horse that stole our hearts with his heart. He was a true champion and will be sadly missed. The Jacksons and Dr. Richardson are to be commended for their dedication in his recovery and for their compassion and love in knowing when to let go. Barbaro will always be in my prayers.

Stanton, KY
I would like to say thank you to the Jackson's for letting the world be a part of this valiant horse's life. Barbaro is an amazing animal. You were so blessed to own such a brave horse. Thank you to Dr. Richardson and his staff at New Bolton for keeping us informed of Barbaro's condition and trying your best to heal this wonderful horse. You all did a wonderful job. The racing industry has lost a true champion but God has gained another winner for his own stable. I can imagine him now running in the fields of heaven and challenging the best of the best. For all of those that were a part of Barbaro's life, you all are in thoughts and prayers.

Upperville, VA
Barbaro you were grace, class and heart. May you rest in peace. God bless

Swartz Creek, Mi.
My prayers are with all involved with Barbaro’s care these past 8 months. Even though he lost one limb at a time, he never lost his heart or his fight through it all. I truly admire this wonderful animal.

Toms River, NJ
This nation is a much better place with your all too short life; you will never be forgotten by all who fell in love with you.

Chesterfield, MO
Our hearts were captured by this champion's even larger heart. To all those who followed this Brave horse’s story, from near and far, although the burden of grief is heavy, console yourself knowing he taught us so much more than about winning horse races. Barbaro's life epitomized determination and victory on and off the track. This Brave horse’s final 'victory' was the lessons he left behind for us all. Race on gallant steed!

Prescott Valley, AZ
I turned on the T.V. one day back in 1987 and came across a striking bay colt named Alysheba and I watched as he streaked across the finish line first in the Preakness. From that day I was hooked on the sport. I've watched many horses, lived through the glory and anticipation and the heartbreak as well. I've owned horses since 1984 and I've personally experienced the highs and lows. The best horse I ever owned, I owned only briefly. She, like Barbaro was taken too soon, the victim of a cruel and freak accident in February 2006. As I waited with baited breath and hoped and prayed for Barbaro, I was struck at how similar these two horses were. My mare suffered a horrendous injury to her left hind leg and the odds weren't good. But during her entire ordeal I was amazed at the poise, charisma, and faith she showed in me as I struggled to save her life. She, like Barbaro was a fighter, she was a model patient, a good friend, and above all one of a kind. It broke my heart when I had to the make the same decision the Jacksons did on Monday. I feel for everyone involved with Barbaro. Like my mare, he was truly one of a kind and though we may never see the likes of either one again, for five wonderful years I was in the presence of greatness. For nearly four years, the Jacksons and connections were in the presence of greatness. I will miss them terribly, but I will never regret anything I did, or forget how much they both meant to me. To both Barbaro and Ziggy, I love you both! Lori Carver

Bronx, NY
To the Jacksons, we were so saddened to hear the news of Barbaro. Our prayers are with you that you may be strengthened and blessed at this time. We are so grateful that you did not give up and walked with Barbaro to the very end. As for Barbaro, for some reason, his plight instilled a warmth in my dad, who is now in his 70's, to recall and tell us the poignant stories we had never heard before of how he cared for and nursed back to health a sick mare when he was a young boy in Puerto Rico and the loss he felt when the horse was sold. However, yesterday we also recalled with a smile, the excitement and joy we felt when we watched Barbaro run the Derby. God bless you, as well as, Dr. Richardson and the staff at New Bolton Center in Penn., Mr. Matz and Mr. Prado for everything you all did.

Mora, Minnesota
I am so sad about Barbaro. He was a special horse who accomplished a great think in his short life. May he be remembered forever. So Long Barbaro!

To my "big boy", I'll never forget the first time that I laid eyes on you. It was in the parade in the moments before the Derby. I had just tuned in and, not knowing much about the field, decided to just pick a horse to root for. Then I saw you and I thought you were the most gorgeous horse I had ever seen. It wasn't just your perfect form. There was like this halo of horse glamour surrounding you. I read your name "Barbaro". I loved it and knew you were the one. When you won so brilliantly, I was hooked like I have never been hooked on a horse before. I'll never forget the good memories. The Derby win. The thrilling anticipation in the weeks before the Preakness (in my native state). Your dauntless will to live. Those bright eyes, that white star, that beautiful face. I can't believe the most beautiful and bravest horse in the world is gone. You were doing so well. We all thought that you were in the clear. Who could have thought that anything could beat our Barbaro? I feel lost knowing that I won’t be doing my daily check on your status anymore. Rest in peace, Great Champion! You more than proved your great ability and God-given grace on the track but you showed much greater heart in your struggle to recover. Truly, you are a horse for the ages. I want to extend my sympathy to all of Barbaro's people and caregivers. You always did the right thing by him and I know that you'll miss him even more than I will. I also want to thank you all for giving him to us each in your own way. All of you are a credit to your given professions. Without a doubt, you did your absolute best.

Whiteland, Indiana
Your determination and completive spirit will live on forever. I am grateful to have had the chance to watch you run. Rest well my friend.

To Roy and Gretchen Jackson, Dr. Richardson, Michael Matz, Edgar Prado, Peter Brette, and all of those who loved and cared for him: May God bless you in the loss of your precious Barbaro. I prayed every night in hopes he would overcome all of the odds. His gallant fight for survival was just another testament of his magnificence. He truly touched the world with his "specialness". Thank you for sharing his special journey (in triumph and tragedy) with all of us. Thank you also for doing all you possibly could to save his life for the world was certainly better with him in it. Please take comfort that he is now in heaven with all of the other "GREAT" ones.

Walterboro, SC
When I heard the sad news about Barbaro, I thought about A.E. Housman's poem "To an Athlete Dying Young." Although it was written about a human athlete, it fit our brave horse so well. "Smart lad, to slip betimes away/from fields where glory does not stay/and early though the laurel grows/It withers quicker than a rose." You will always be our beautiful, undefeated champion.

Grand Island, NE
In a world where so much time is devoted to "sportsmen" like Terrell Owens, it was heartening to see an animal who could only communicate through his eyes show the world what true grace and courage is. Barbaro transcended horse racing...his legacy is not so much on the track as it is in our hearts. We can learn so much from animals if we only take the time to do so.

Jacksonville, AR
CH Barbaro will always be a Great Hero in showing us what the true meaning of taking each day & living it to the fullest & to enjoy each moment in our lives. Mr. & Mrs. Jackson, Thank you for giving Barbaro a chance, your courage and commitment are truly admired.

There is one less thing of beauty in the world today. Barbaro was a true champion in every meaning of the word. He was beautiful standing still or at a gallop to the finish line. He was also beautiful in his fight for life. He should have won the Triple Crown, but instead he won the hearts of America. I will never forget his time on earth and I know he is running free now. The efforts of The Jacksons and Dr. Richardson and his staff to try and save this magnificent horse deserves our gratitude. They must feel a tremendous loss. Godspeed, Barbaro. Jim Mitchell

We are deeply saddened with losing you, but we will never forget you. Your legacy of hope, courage, inspiration, determination and love will remain forever with us. Thank you for sharing your life with us and thank you to the Mr. and Mrs. Jackson, Dr. Richardson and the New Bolton staff, Trainer Matz and his track staff, jockey Edgar Prado for being there with him throughout the best of times and the worst of times.

I love Thoroughbreds and currently own one. I wish the U.S. racing industry would follow the lead of the Australians and delay starting the horses until they are 3. Artificial tracks in the East should also be helping prevent breakdowns.

I am sad for the death of such great and courageous animal and thankful for compassionate doctors and owners. This story is another example of how much our love for animals impact our thoughts and lives.

A Tribute to Barbaro. We mourn the loss of promise, of hope and of talent. We mourn the loss of a heart filled with courage and feet with wings. We mourn the loss of what could have been, and now never will be. We mourn the loss of a true champion, who has now passed into legend.

What a beautiful boy...may he rest in peace. I know he is enjoying the lush green pastures and crystal blue streams in heaven.

I have been keeping an eye on the reports of Barbaro. Family and friends have even asked me if there where any new developments. When I read that he had developed laminitis, I couldn't help but think of Secretariat and his battle with laminitis. I knew the odds where not good for Barbaro, but I was hopeful, and I prayed. But alas... My heart goes out to all those people that where just as hopeful, and especially to the Jackson's and to Dr. Dean Richardson, who where with him through-out, until the end.

Barbaro was such a wonderful horse who had his life ahead of him. I'm very sad to see him go. But even though he's no longer living, he will always be in our minds and hearts forever. He truly was a born-champ! May he continue to race in horsy heaven for all eternity? Kirin Arnold—age 21

When this country needed a hero, it came in the form of a strapping Thoroughbred named Barbaro. Unlike other sports icons who fall from grace or thrive on endorsements. This four legged hero thrived on winning, on this incredible urge not to be passed by his competition. You could see it in the grand way that he ran and how he simply decimated his competition. But he wasn't just a racehorse either. To his owners, he wasn't just a champion; he was a member of their family. The courage he demonstrated to live gave them the time to shower their champion with richly deserved affection. In the end, it gave the Jacksons the courage to do the right thing and let Barbaro go. When the world needed a hero that transcended all faiths, races, and cultures, we were fortunate to be blessed with Barbaro and the Jacksons.

Oh to have a seat on the sidelines of Eternity. To see Barbaro muscle up alongside the likes of Man O' War, Kelso, Citation; to nip and tease the great fillies like Ruffian and Genuine Risk into match races. What a place this must be where these champions among champions leave us for. A place with no handicappers, no jockeys, no post parade; where pure horsepower reigns supreme and untainted. I was born in 1978, the year that Affirmed won the last Triple Crown. Every year since then that I can remember, since I was a horse crazy little girl, I've watched great horses try and fail to beat this enormous challenge. Many had talent, some class, some incredible heart, and some luck; Barbaro was a poster child for the first three, he was a force of nature, incredible to watch, and I thought for sure that he would be my Triple Crown horse. I sit heartbroken, furious that a horse with such incredible determination and indomitable spirit has been stolen from us all after such a fight. Cu-dos to Barbaro's connections for making all the right decisions. All the right decisions. I hope even those outside the racing world realize how far this gallant colt has brought equine medicine. Every horse that enters a clinic from this time forward, anywhere in the world will benefit from the knowledge that has been gained by this fight. The Universe has many things to answer for, not the least of which, the fact that Barbaro never got his Triple Crown, he would have dug in for every last inch of it and I would have been at the wire, cheering him on, what a sight to see indeed. Save me a spot at the rail Big Horse, I'll bring the mints. R. Robertson.

Barbaro - you made us all realize life is precious and live it to the fullest even in the toughest of times and to never give up the fight. Your strength and courage should never be forgotten but applied to all we do in life. You will be dearly missed - you are a true champion. Denise

I was getting water for the future Emerald Downs Race horses in Auburn, Washington, when I heard the news. My tears went into the water. I then hugged the giant neck of "Little Blast" a 4 year old TB racer until I could compose myself. I commend the Jacksons and Dr Richardson for all they did for their beloved Barbaro. They gave their all and the world remembers and is grateful.

I have seen many great race horses in my lifetime but none has captured my heart like Barbaro. He was a true champion on and off the track. I commend the Jackson's, Dr. Richardson and all of his staff and all involved for trying to do the impossible and pretty darn came close to doing it. I am saddened by his loss, but smile in that I have seen greatness. He will be missed but never forgotten!!! George K.

He reminds me of Gen. Duke, way back in 57. Both died before their potential was realized Barbaro should have been best 3 yr old. Won on fast, sloppy, turf, different tracks. Not many could do that. Been watching these horses for 52 years. Barbaro impressed me. Lynn Taylor

In my entire life (of 40 years), I have never felt such grief with an animal passing...even more than my own dog! I was a true Barbaro fan and hoped he would pull through. He had such great courage and life and now he is grazing, pain free....I am so sorry Barbaro, we will miss you dear Barbaro! You will never be forgotten. Deepest sympathies, Irene

Because of Barbaro, more attention has come to all horses. All my gratefulness goes to Gretchen Jackson, who in her grief during the press conference, was able to remind people to care for ALL horses....the important thing is to see them to the end of their lives. Most horses live a very long time--I yearned for Barbaro to live to be 30 like one of mine, but that was not to be. But there are so many kinder, wonderful, loving horses that need our help to live out their lives and not be thrown away (or sold) when they are no longer useful.

I love animals but I had never been interested in horses until Barbaro "raced” into all of our hearts. I am sad that he is gone. A true champion. What wonderful owners he had, and what great care he got. He was loved by all.

I'm just sitting here reading the wonderful tributes to this great horse and crying at the same time. I never thought Barbaro's death would affect me in the same way it did when the Great One Secretariat passed away in 1989 from laminitis. My heart goes out to the Jacksons, Dr Richardson, Michael Matz, Edgar Prado and even Barbaro's Groom. The Staff at New Bolton should also be mentioned. I know a lot of love went into the care of this wonderful horse. I believe that Penney Chenery (Secretariat's Owner) would've done the same thing the Jacksons did for Barbaro had the technology been available in the 70's. When Barbaro was pulled up in the Preakness, I just sobbed uncontrollably. If it had not been for that catastrophe, I truly believe he would've been the next Triple Crown Winner. All I can say to you big fella, and that is win that TC in Heaven and say hello to "Slew", Sec and Affirmed, and don't forget Ruffian, Ferdinand and the "Bid". Run pain-free and eat lots of green grass. I know your Dad, Dynaformer misses you and every horse lover also. Rest well Barbaro, you've earned it. Carol

I was an employee of New Bolton Center when I was watching the race that day and saw his horrible accident. My heart sunk so hard I couldn’t breathe. When I showed up at work the next morning to a parking lot full of camera/news crews it was amazing. Everyday there were hundreds upon hundreds of carrots, and treats, even gift baskets for the workers and staff of new Bolton. Honestly I would love to see a movie made in remembrance of Barbaro. To see a horse born in PA, and trained down the street in fair hill. By a man who was known mainly as a magnificent Jumper rider. Go so far in such a big industry. Come so close to the Triple Crown winner that we all knew he was going to be. His heart was in it. And he will always live on in my heart.

Having a life-long love affair with the courage and beauty of the Thoroughbred horse, watching the Triple Crown Races for over 40 years, and owning horses since the age of 7, my heart breaks for those associated with this great horse and his loss. We all want happy endings and grief when it turns out badly, seems to be the lot of those who share their lives with those animals who face adversity so gallantly. Barbaro and his people are gallant and courageous. Thank you for sharing with all of us the blessings his life and your caring has bestowed. The memories will be a great gift and a stepping-stone to the future of horse racing and other equine developments

We will never forget you Barbaro. You possessed all that is good about life. Like you, I was once very athletic and full of vigor, but I am now struggling with severe knee arthritis in my early 40's. So I have somewhat related to your struggles...You didn't deserve this injury...unfortunately, life isn't fair...You were and are a beautiful being and spirit. And your beautiful spirit lives on in Heaven, where you can be all that you were meant to be once again. Thank you, Barbaro! Sincerely, with love and adoration, Kent

Not a day has gone by in the last eight months that I have not checked to see any latest news on Barbaro. Today is a joyless and broken hearted day! Thanks to Roy and Gretchen Jackson, Dr Richardson and staff, Michael Matz, Edgar Prado, and all who did everything to save him. Barbaro's legacy is that he transcended the betting and the money - replacing it with a human caring for a horse that no one could ever imagine.

My family has followed the story of "Barbaro" since day one. I have been involved in the Thoroughbred race horse industry for over 28 years. Everyone in the industry was pulling for a recovery of some sort so the news of Barbaro's passing really touches the hearts of us all.

Barbaro, you are John F. Kennedy’s "Profile in Courage!" Your courageness, your tenacious spirit, and loving disposition are an example of what humans should follow in their own lives. You have always been the champ to me; to fight so hard and never want to give up. Run, my love, run with the wind! Run like your heart always wanted to run! My dog Scooter, is running with you. One day I will be able to give you the hug that I always wanted to. Thank you for the journey, BARBARO, it was magnificent! Love, Susan
