Dr. John Steiner, an equine reproductive specialist who was a diplomate of the American College of Theriogenologists and served as the organization’s president in 2005-2006, died May 26 at the Albany Medical Center in New York after being taken off life support, according to the Poughkeepsie Journal. The newspaper reported that Steiner, who had been in critical condition in a medically-induced coma, suffered massive head injuries when he was struck and knocked to the ground by a Morgan stallion he was about to perform a procedure on May 20. Earlier this year, Steiner, 64, joined the staff of Rhineback Equine after he and his wife, Geri, moved to New York. Steiner previously worked at the Lexington-based Hagyard Equine Medical Center (formerly Hagyard-Davidson-McGee), where he had been a member of the staff since 1992. He began the Equine Fertility Unit at the Central Kentucky veterinary practice and became its director.
