Wes Gilbert, who trained racehorses for more than 50 years, died at his home in Hayward, Calif., on May 20 after a lengthy illness. The Idaho native was 79 and had suffered a serious stroke three years ago.
Gilbert raced horses in Canada (Hastings Park in Vancouver), Washington (Longacres near Seattle), Oregon (Portland Meadows), and Arizona (Turf Paradise in Phoenix) before settling in Northern California, where he trained for 30 years.
Gilbert is best known for his outstanding work with the Oregon-bred horse Hap Logue, who in 1973 set a Northern California record when he won 11 straight races.
Gilbert owned Hap Logue, who had his winning streak snapped when he finished third in the $25,000 Saratoga Starter Handicap at Bay Meadows on Dec. 2, 1973.
Hap Logue's record still stands.
Gilbert is survived by his wife, Jean; his daughter, Wanda Carpenter; and grandson Chris and granddaughter Melissa.
Per Gilbert's request, no formal services are planned.
